Course description

This online lecture presents a reflection on the “Undoing Autocracy: Critical Inquiry into Democratic Transitions” Challenge, developed as part of the Political Transformations Minor at the University of Rijeka. The Challenge represents an intensive, research-based learning component in which participants work in international teams over a three-month period. Combining policy-oriented and critical theoretical approaches, they examine empirical cases of autocratisation and explore different pathways and constraints shaping political transformation. Their work is assessed through both individual analytical contributions and collective outputs, fostering both independent thinking and collaborative research.

The timing of this lecture follows the participants’ final presentations at the Cres seminar (early May), allowing for a reflective discussion of their research findings, methodological choices, and key lessons learned. The session will introduce the topic in an accessible way while also offering insight into critical inquiry as a teaching approach and into participant-led research within the YUFE framework.

The Minor in Political Transformations is a newly established interdisciplinary programme aimed at equipping participants with analytical tools to understand major political, economic, and societal transformations, with a particular focus on governance, public policy, and processes of political change.
