On March 11, 2025, students of the First Croatian Gymnasium in Rijeka, together with students of Croatian Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Rijeka, participated in a discussion and workshop on the novel Leafing Cabbage by Igor Beleš. During the workshop, they analyzed the basic motifs and themes of Beleš’s novel, especially its political, anti-war and social aspects. It is a novel that was awarded the Krunoslav Sukić Peace Prize for the Peace Book of the Year in 2023, at the proposal of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies of the University of Rijeka.
This event is part of the project Politics of Literature in the Works of Rijeka Authors from the 20th Century to the Present, the Literary Program Rijeka Words and the educational activities of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies of the University of Rijeka. It provided students with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of the meaning of the political in a literary text.
The workshop was designed and conducted by Helena de Karina on behalf of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies of the University of Rijeka, professor of Croatian language at the First Croatian Gymnasium in Rijeka, full professor Sanja Tadić-Šokac from the Department of Croatian Studies, and librarian Sandra Vidović from the same high school.
